Fashion Documentaries to Keep On Your Radar

With last week’s premiere of the trailer for Iris, the upcoming documentary about iconic 93-year old fashion maven Iris Apfel, we take a look at some of the most noteworthy fashion movies (both confirmed and those still in production) that are set to be released in the coming months. Get the popcorn ready.

Director: Albert Maysles
Starring: Iris Apfel

Iconic fashion maven Iris Apfel is celebrated in this colorful documentary —just like her life—that touches on her expansive, influential career. Iris, as the movie is titled, has been in the making since 2010: “It was challenging to keep up with her. It was one surprise after the other. Beyond those magnificent eyeglasses, she was so full of grace and humanity,” director Albert Maysles admits.

Director: Bertrand Bonello
Starring: Gaspard Ulliel, Jérémie Renier, Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel

The more high profile of the two recent movies portraying the life of famed designer Yves Saint Laurent (the other being 2014’s Yves Saint Laurent), Saint Laurent narrowly missed out on being nominated for an Academy Award earlier this year (the movie was France’s official entry). Which is to say—there is likely some merit to it. The film focuses on Saint Laurent’s life from 1967 to 1976—by many considered his peak years—and stars Gaspard Ulliel in the titular role alongside new bond girl Léa Seydoux.

Not much is known about this one, except for the fact that, for the past year, the high end jewelry house has been working directly with director Matthew Miele (whose work behind the camera includes 2013’s Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s) on an official documentary which is slated for tentative release in the second half of this year.
