First look: Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’

Luca Guadagnino's new feature 'Queer' gets a premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

Luca Guadagnino’s new feature film Queer sees the director return to the Lido, where the film will premiere in competition at the upcoming Venice Film Festival which runs from August 28th – September 7th. Clocking in at 2 hours 31 minutes, the film appears to have lost half an hour of run time in editing over what Guadagnino announced would be a 3-hour movie.

Based on William S. Burroughs’ controversial 1985 novel and written by Challengers screenwriter Justin Kuritzkers, the film stars Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Omar Appolo, Henrique Zaga, Andres Duprat, Ariel Shulman, Drew Droege, Colin Bates, and filmmakers Lisandro Alonso, David Lowery, and Michael Borremans.

Set in 1940s Mexico City, Queer centers around American expatriate William Lee (Craig), living large on US government benefits, and his growing infatuation with a younger man, Eugene Allerton (Starkey). Pre-release buzz is heavy on praise for Vraig’s performance, who was mentioned by Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera, in an interview for Variety, as a favorite for a Best Actor award.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross scored the film.

Queer currently has no distributor nor release date.
