“Darkness is an inescapable part of life,” says Swedish designer Patrik Guggenberger. Praised for his classic garments restructured into opulently draped avant-garde pieces, the young designer (he is yet to graduate from Stockholm’s Beckman College of Design) has steadily been making waves on the international fashion circuit.
This month, he unveiled his ambitious new collection, called “Tailings.” Following on from his previous collection, the futuristic “The Reflecting Skin,” “Tailings” is an ‘earthier’, more organic collection. Guggenberger uses leather, felted wool, mohair and waxed canvas to create oversized, deconstructed garments with dramatic draping.
The word tailings itself refers to the byproduct left behind after extracting precious stones and minerals from a mine. It is against such stark imagery that Guggenberger drew inspiration for the creation of “Tailings.” But while darkness pervades the collection, it is something Guggenberger finds liberating, rather than sorrowful.
