Five questions with Brazilian photography dup Silva+Cemin.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you two came about working together? Our background is always about innovation through an imagery aesthetic. We believe an artist has to be able to evolve. We’ve started working together since we met in 2011 and became a couple. We try to make our work unique from the very beginning and we guess it’s an endless try because we always want to make the things even better. We will never stop.
Do you bounce ideas off each other? Our ideas are a sum. One of us might have an idea in the first time but the other will always add something to the process.
What inspires your work? Your photos are both surreal and gritty – do you create work spontaneously or is there a fairly structured process? We have been very inspired by images which were taken with low budget digital cameras. We used to do some research but now we are trying to make the things even more natural. In our first images you could identify our main inspirations and now the influences are more mixed. We could say our mess is very well planned.
What messages are you trying to convey through your work? Evolution and revolution.
Do you look up to any photographers or artists in particular? The new digital images of Juergen Teller are great. But we are more focused in looking up for beauty inspirations (like make-up, hair design and stuff).
Name a movie, an album and a book that you recently liked. Nymphomaniac is very inspiring for nude pictures. Lady Gaga’s last album, Artpop, has some artsy tunes which are great to listen to during the shoots. Marcelo Krasilcic’ photobook 1990s is stunning.
