Now that London Fashion Week has come to a close, we reflect on what worked (and what didn&#8217;t) at the F\/W 2015 showcase.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\">The other day, I was\u00a0reminiscing on\u00a0the days of Galliano for Dior and his divisive,\u00a0yet inventive and unarguably original legacy, and then, the realization struck me:\u00a0the current fashion climate, while commendable in that it is\u00a0allowing so much young talent to blossom in London, is also disappointingly derivative: ideas are either being recycled, ripped off or re-worked to appease\u00a0the consumer. The days of original\u00a0graduate showcases\u00a0have given way to\u00a0polished and semi-wearable collections that conform\u00a0with buyers&#8217; strict guidelines for commercial restraint. Surely fashion week is meant to be an exhilarating display of hyper-real creative visions that is meant to\u00a0inspire the press, bloggers and audiences\u00a0&#8211; after all, one can always tone the collection down at the buyers&#8217; appointments. Sadly, these are all\u00a0wishes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\">Which isn&#8217;t to say it was all bad. There were definitely a few favorites that have left lasting memories for all the right reasons\u2014mainly by simply being true to the designers&#8217; aesthetic and by offering an\u00a0exciting breath of fresh and innovative concepts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\"><b>Jonathan Saunders <\/b>provided a modern refinement of the seventies by presenting folklore embroidery and tasteful bell-bottoms that juxtaposed so beautifully with patterned tunics layered on top of colourful polo necks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\"><b>JW Anderson<\/b>\u00a0(<em>photos below<\/em>) went against the much loved pre-70s glamour that seemed to be ubiquitous elsewhere\u00a0and took us back to the 80s with heavy-metal chain skirts ready for the dance floor contrasted against gigantic capes in soft neutrals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: 'old standard tt', serif; font-size: 14px;\"><b>Christopher Kane<\/b> brought us some sex appeal but managed to maintain a classy yet elegant demure which is not the easiest of tasks! Cocktail dresses stripped across the bosom were followed by velvet suits with unusual black taping on the top which surely left us oozing at the clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\"><b>Gareth Pugh <\/b>was a pleasant comeback to London Fashion Week as the much needed drama and sassiness was desperately missed! Taking inspiration from Boudicca and football fans, Pugh showcased monkey-fur shaggy silhouettes with knee-high ink black boots dressed against battle-ready bodices with glimmering needle-like embroidery.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\">While the above designers showcased an exciting originality in\u00a0vision and execution, not all collections were equally as successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\">I wasn\u2019t so fond on the Victorian vision <b>PPQ <\/b>were throwing forward at the fashion crowd\u2014it was too literal of an interpretation with\u00a0respect to what modern fashion should be refining into nowadays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\">Another underwhelming moment\u00a0was <b>Julien MacDonald\u2019s <\/b>display of bondage gothic glamour clothing that looked sadly\u00a0tacky, and tackily sad,\u00a0both in respect\u00a0to the fabric choices as well as\u00a0<em>applique<\/em> of clashing textures that didn\u2019t seem to set well\u2014in my stomach or anyone else&#8217;s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\">Lastly, designer <b>Ashley Williams<\/b> aimed for the stars\u00a0when it came to designing her collection but didn&#8217;t seem to leave earth\u2014what was shown appeared to be rushed concepts and a disappointing\u00a0attempt at\u00a0bringing back 90s glamour which, ultimately, fell flat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: 'old standard tt', serif;\">Overall,\u00a0London Fashion Week offered\u00a0an unsteady rate of brilliant\u00a0moments interspersed with disappointing collections\u2014but despite all of its commercial trappings,\u00a0what\u00a0remains so\u00a0invigorating about\u00a0the event is that, year after year, no-one can compete with London in terms of emerging talent that is growing so rapidly in the capital.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London Fashion Week F\/W15:\u00a0a mix\u00a0between desire and disdain in a constant battle for sanity against creativity.
