{"id":3178,"date":"2015-04-10T12:53:05","date_gmt":"2015-04-10T12:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/notofu.com\/home\/?p=3178"},"modified":"2015-04-10T12:53:05","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T12:53:05","slug":"david-lynch-between-two-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/notofu.com\/new\/david-lynch-between-two-worlds\/","title":{"rendered":"David Lynch, Between Two Worlds: A Union of Art, Film and Xiu Xiu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the fact that his latest directorial feature, the obscurely fascinating <em>Inland Empire<\/em>, was released almost a decade ago, David Lynch&#8217;s legacy as a filmmaker, artist and visionary is perhaps more profoundly\u00a0vital today than it has\u00a0ever been.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond his work as a filmmaker, David Lynch\u00a0has been, throughout his entire career, a prolific painter and artist,\u00a0with a body of work that spans hundreds of artworks, paintings, photographs and works on paper.<\/p>\n<p>Now, over\u00a0200 of these are on display at the\u00a0Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane, Australia as part of the exhibition\u00a0<em>David Lynch: Between Two Worlds<\/em>.\u00a0The show features Lynch&#8217;s rarely seen paintings and drawings from the 1960s as well as lithographs, a selecton of\u00a0Lynch\u2019s photographs of factories and nudes, recent large-scale paintings, and a complete retrospective of his film, video and television work.<\/p>\n<p>The works are\u00a0organized in three sections\u00a0\u2013 \u2018Man and machine\u2019, \u2018The extra-ordinary\u2019, and \u2018Psychic Aches\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition\u2019s curator, Jos\u00e9 Da Silva, Senior Curator at QAGOMA, describes the themes that connect the filmmaker and artist&#8217;s work as\u00a0\u201c<em>moving between the porous divide of the body and the world it inhabits, the exhibition explores the subjects of industry and organic phenomena; representations of inner conflict; and the possibility of finding a deeper reality in our experience of the everyday.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two musical events accompany the\u00a0exhibition:\u00a0<em>HEXA<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Xiu Xiu plays the music of Twin Peaks.\u00a0<\/em>For <em>HEXA<\/em>, Xiu Xiu frontman Jamie Stewart joins forces with\u00a0Brisbane-based composer Lawrence English to create a sound-based performance that, while accompanying Lynch&#8217;s Factory photographs, explores the relationship of sound and the body.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0<em>Xiu Xiu plays the music of Twin Peaks, <\/em>the entire band\u2014Jamie Stewart, Angela Seo and Shayna Dunkelman\u2014will recreate the music from the cult 1990 television series <em>Twin Peaks<\/em> originally\u00a0composed by\u00a0Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch. The\u00a0experience will not be unique to this exhibition, however, as Xiu Xiu will bring the performance to select audiences in the Fall, starting with London on October 8.<\/p>\n<p>Xiu Xiu&#8217;s Jamie Stewart explains: \u201c<em>[The music of Twin Peaks] is romantic, it is terrifying, it is beautiful, it is unnervingly sexual.
