{"id":3864,"date":"2015-06-23T18:11:13","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T18:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/notofu.com\/home\/?p=3864"},"modified":"2015-06-23T18:11:13","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T18:11:13","slug":"best-in-show-at-art-basel-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/notofu.com\/new\/best-in-show-at-art-basel-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Best In Show At Art Basel 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With $3 billion worth of art shown by 284 galleries, Art Basel\u2014which closed on Sunday\u2014was, this year, not only a commercial success that matched if not eclipsed prior showcases, but it also signaled a renewed interest on the part of audiences\u2014whether serious collectors or\u00a0recreational buyers\u2014to invest in art in a way that has reinvigorated galleries. Some examples? <strong>Agnes Martin<\/strong>&#8216;s 1966 acrylic-and-graphite painting <em>Mountain II<\/em> sold at David Zwirner for $9.5 million, while\u00a0<strong>Paul McCarthy<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>White Snow, Bambi (marble)<\/em>\u00a0sold for $2.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>But sales were steady at the museum level as well, with more works being placed in museum collections this year than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most memorable art came from Unlimited\u2014curated by Gianni Jetzer and dedicated to artworks ranging from big\u00a0to\u00a0outright\u00a0gigantic\u2014with works ranging from <strong>Ai Weiwei<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Stacked<\/em> to\u00a0<strong>William E. Jones<\/strong>&#8216;\u00a0<i>America, Hail Satan.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Outside of the sales hustle, there was truly memorable art on display. Mexican artist <strong>Jose D\u00e1vila<\/strong> (<em>see below<\/em>), represented by OMR gallery,\u00a0displayed a number of compelling works focused on experimentation\u00a0with suspension. His sculptures teeter on the edge of equilibrium, with sheets of glass held in place by colorful braces. <strong>Robert Overby<\/strong> (<em>below<\/em>), known for\u00a0assembling images with\u00a0fragments taken from advertising, pornography, architecture, and book covers, landed in Basel with the subversive\u00a0<em>Claps.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Below, we highlight some of the
