Digital artist Molly\u00a0Soda needs no introduction:\u00a0with over\u00a065k Instagram followers,\u00a0Soda has become\u00a0the darling of\u00a0a new generation of\u00a0uber-connected millenials\u00a0that has come\u00a0of age alongside social\u00a0media. Her projects\u2014occasionally\u00a0crude, always personal\u2014speak of Soda\u2019s\u00a0self-awareness, but\u00a0also of her desire to connect with her audience\u00a0on a visceral level. Earlier this year, she debuted\u00a0Should I Send This?<\/em>, a digital project of self-leaked nudes. It went viral, of course. Amidst all the hype, we caught up with Soda about art, her message and her creative process.<\/p>\n

You have described your work as \u201cself-indulgent,\u201d and shared that it originates from a desire to seek validation.<\/em>\u00a0How much do your insecurities, and the audience\u2019s response, influence your work?<\/em>
\nInsecurities dictate everything, so it makes sense that it would seep into my work. We are all insecure\u2014it just manifests itself differently for each person. For me, I deal with my feelings online. Being vocal has led me to feel less ashamed and more comforted by the idea that other people feel the same. I\u2019m not alone.<\/p>\n

Who is your target audience?<\/em>
\nAnyone who will listen, watch, read… whatever it may be. My audience\u00a0changes depending on the platform I\u2019m using\u2014for example,\u00a0my Tumblr followers are aware of whom I am, while someone\u00a0who stumbles upon one of my YouTube videos may have no\u00a0idea what\u2019s going on. I welcome all of them.<\/p>\n

What would you you like to have known 5 years ago that you know now?<\/em>
\nIt is pretty cool how much I\u2019ve changed over even just the\u00a0past year\u2014and if you\u2019re someone who puts everything online,
\nyour progress and your evolution have been neatly charted and\u00a0archived for you. 5 years ago I would have liked to know that\u00a0\u201ceverything\u2019s gonna be okay.\u201d But you know, I think I\u2019ve always\u00a0known that deep down.<\/p>\n

There have been some\u00a0that have not taken to\u00a0your work kindly. How\u00a0do you compartmentalize\u00a0\u201chaters\u201d?<\/em>
\nAt this point, I\u2019m\u00a0so past being upset\u00a0by negative things\u00a0people say to me online.\u00a0I\u2019ve been dealing\u00a0with negativity online since I was a\u00a0teenager, which has\u00a0only made me more\u00a0resilient. I\u2019m not one\u00a0to dwell on things. If anything, the \u201chate\u201d is mildly amusing\u2026 I\u2019m sort of fond of it in a weird way.<\/p>\n

You are generally described\u00a0as a feminist.\u00a0Would you agree with\u00a0<\/em>that?<\/em>
\nI do agree with that!\u00a0I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve\u00a0ever set out to make\u00a0\u201cfeminist\u201d work but\u00a0it makes sense that\u00a0people would want to\u00a0label it… people want\u00a0to label everything.\u00a0Generally speaking,\u00a0if you\u2019re a woman making work using your body or strong feminine\u00a0symbols\u2014your work is going to be called feminist.\u00a0Once you put a feminist lens over the work in question, people\u00a0then feel free to project whatever their \u201cfeminism\u201d means onto\u00a0it\u2014whether it\u2019s feminist or not, etc. It happens to my work all\u00a0of the time. I\u2019ve watched huge comment threads arguing that\u00a0my work isn\u2019t feminist or that it\u2019s too feminist. Of course I\u2019m a\u00a0feminist! But can we take a look at the work in question and take\u00a0it for what it is?<\/p>\n

Is there any medium that you have wanted to work in that you haven\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>been able to yet?<\/em>
\nI would love to work in 3D\u2014I just haven\u2019t had the patience or\u00a0the time to teach myself. I honestly think it would take my work\u00a0to a new level.<\/p>\n

Your Should I Send This? series of \u201cleaked\u201d nudes alludes to the fact\u00a0that you are comfortable with nudity, or at least as much as your work\u00a0requires it. Is this true and, if so, what is your relationship to nudity?<\/em>
\nI\u2019m only interested in incorporating nudity when it seems fitting.\u00a0Most of my work doesn\u2019t involve it. \u201cShould I Send This?\u201d called\u00a0for it and it made sense within that context.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
