In his largest installation in the U.S. to date, French artist Philippe Parreno gives American audiences an opportunity to experience first-hand the monumental scope of his work through a large-scale fusion of art, film, music and architecture.
In Park Avenue Armory’s expansive Wade Thompson Drill Hall, Parreno, with the help of set designer Randall Peacock, will stage an ambitious, multi-sensory show, which will incorporate sound, film and live performance. The central element of the show are 26 marquee light sculptures by Parreno, six of which are being made especially for this exhibition, recalling old-fashioned illuminated theater canopies and billboards. Alongside these sculptures, viewers will be treated to rotating screenings of Parreno’s movies including The Crowd, a new film shot within the Armory’s drill hall space and June 8, 1968, a film recalling the train journey that transported the corpse of assassinated senator JF Kennedy from New York to Washington D.C.
Alongside the visual elements, Parreno is staging a live performance by pianist Mikhail Rudy.
The multi-sensory experience will see Parreno explore the notion of the live “presentation” by staging a monumental show that is as much art as it is a situational process wherein audiences not only experience the created stage — they inform it.
