German photographer Henrick Malmstr\u00f6m takes us on a tour of Hamburg\u2019s dark underbelly\u2014the central neighborhood of St. Georg\u2014which is home to such reputable establishments as the German National Theater. Around the corner, however, the neighborhood hides the\u00a0city\u2019s unofficial \u201cred light district\u201d, a collection of old bars, coffee shops and small, dingy restaurants. It is this where\u00a0Malmstr\u00f6m\u2019s camera lingers: over 256 pages, Malmstr\u00f6m documents the\u00a0underdogs of Hamburg\u2019s \u201cstreets of shame,\u201d as\u00a0Malmstr\u00f6m calls them\u2014prostitutes, pimps, bartenders and regular clients trying to escape the city\u2019s public lights in search of a space without judgment.<\/p>\nNo images attached\n

Smoking may not be as hot as it once was, but in Thomas Sauvin\u2019s new photobook Until Death Do Us Part<\/em>, cigarettes are the main protagonist. Sauvin, a French photography collector, has assembled a pocket-sized collection of old photos that focuses on the role cigarettes used to play in Chinese weddings. Traditions, which young generations now consider surprising, included the bride lighting a cigarette for every man at the wedding, followed by cigarette-centric games. The book is published by Jiazazhi, one of the few independent photobook publishers in China. It comes with a package of real Double Happiness cigarettes.<\/p>\nNo images attached\n
