But what makes <em>Manchester by the Sea<\/em> more than a melancholy story of family, death and hope, is the tender way in which its individual elements elevate it into a\u00a0carefully-constructed, unforgettable masterpiece.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4741\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/notofu.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2016-11-12-1478968694-5201741-manchesterbythesea-1-1024x576.jpg?resize=1024%2C576\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moonlight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An exquisite ensemble effort, <em>Moonlight<\/em>\u00a0should be\u00a0experienced,\u00a0not retold. Hypnotic in its execution, <em>Moonlight<\/em> is that rare coming of-age story that plays out like a poetic art piece\u2014intimate, heartbreaking,\u00a0relatable. But to say <em>Moonlight<\/em> is about any one thing\u2014the most obvious being the tough coming-of-age of its central character, a\u00a0black gay male growing up in Miami\u2014would be to discount\u00a0what makes the movie so triumphant: its vital portrait of African-American culture is a universal,\u00a0observant and deeply emotive\u00a0document framed by cogent yet understated cinematic\u00a0fluorishes.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4730\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/notofu.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/hq720-1024x576.jpg?resize=1024%2C576\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Krisha<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Director Trey Edward Shult made waves as soon as <em>Krisha<\/em>\u2014his first full-length feature film\u2014hit the festival circuit in early 2016. And with good reason: <em>Krisha<\/em> is an incredible film\u2014a brisk, jagged family drama that is, at once, as intense and difficult as it is emotive and humane. Home for Thanksgiving after a decade away from her family, Krisha is ready for\u00a0reconciliation. Or is she? A seen-before premise gives way for a brutal, honest and poignant character study that plays as a\u00a0gut-punch of emotional distress.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4725\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/notofu.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/krisha-1024x576.jpg?resize=1024%2C576\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Antonio Campos&#8217; growing oeuvre is\u00a0reflective of a strong sense of vision, and a penchant for stories\u00a0fueled by dramatic protagonists that write their own destiny through actions they direct yet, \u00a0have no ability to\u00a0control.\u00a0Such is <em>Christine<\/em>, a chilling character study based on the real-life story story of Christine Chubbuck, \u00a0a newscaster for Sarasota, Fla. based WTOG and WXLT-TV who, in 1974, took her life on air. Like Chelsea from Campos&#8217; <em>Buy It Now<\/em>\u00a0before it, <em>Christine<\/em>&#8216;s titular character is a provocative, tragically complex anti-heroine\u00a0trapped in the crosshairs of ambition\u00a0and a damaged psyche. Grim without being sensationalist, <em>Christine<\/em>\u00a0rises above its narrow subject matter to question\u00a0complex matters of identity and self-worth.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4719\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/notofu.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/christine.26559.16571_Christine_still2_RebeccaHall__byJoeAnderson.jpg?resize=680%2C478\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"478\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things to Come<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Things to Come<\/em> was not Isabelle Huppert&#8217;s only movie that debuted this year\u2014it was her fourth, in fact\u2014but it was\u00a0the one where she turned in her most affecting\u00a0performance.\u00a0Mia Hansen-L\u00f8ve&#8217;s restrained, powerful drama\u2014in which Huppert\u00a0plays a Parisian academic whose life is rattled by a series of life-altering events\u2014is a contemplatively nuanced reflection on middle-age, tempered with a profoundly moving performance by Huppert. But the movie is as much about Huppert&#8217;s controlled, gutsy performanceship as it is about Hansen-L\u00f8ve&#8217;s penchant for crafting emotion without devolving into pathos.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4718\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/notofu.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/201609145_1_IMG_FIX_700x700.jpg?resize=700%2C467\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In no particular order, here are the movies that made us cry, laugh and scream at the screen this past year.
