The Gagosian has this week opened an exhibition of new paintings by Helen Marden. Grief Paintings<\/em>\u00a0are abstract works created with resin, powdered pigment, ink, and natural objects including shells. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the latter, Marden said in a recent interview for the Gagosian Quarterly<\/a>, “I\u2019m also just generally inspired by the natural world […] I\u2019ve included seashells because they\u2019ve been a presence all my life; I remember collecting them with my mom. And I guess they mean a certain strength, but also they\u2019re fragile.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The abstractions, she added, happen organically. “I sit on the sofa, and I have some color in my mind, and then I sit there too long, and then I jump up and I run over and I stir the resin. And then I pour that color in and jump again and run over, and there it goes,” Marden explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition runs through 14th September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
