This showcase honors pioneering surrealist women like Leonor Fini, Leonora Carrington, and Dorothea Tanning, along with contemporary artists Sarah Anstis, Piper Bangs, and Ginny Casey.

As part of a broader Centre Pompidou initiative celebrating Surrealism’s centenary, the exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the movement’s vibrant energy. By focusing on the contributions of women artists, “Surrealism in the Service of Distraction” challenges traditional art historical narratives and highlights the underrepresented voices of these groundbreaking creators.

Leonora Carrington, La Dragonesa, 2010, lost wax bronze, 44 x 26 x 29 cm, édition of 10, rossogranada
/ Leonor Fini, Visage imaginaire, circa 1960, watercolour on paper, 30 x 20 cm

Through the works of these artists, viewers will experience a radical reimagining of femininity, challenging societal norms and paving the way for future generations.
