Its art scene thrives on experimentation, underground culture, and the occasional disregard for good taste. While the city’s established galleries continue to attract international collectors, a new generation of independent spaces is challenging what a gallery should look and feel like. From an exhibition space inside a subway station to a Kreuzberg newcomer exploring the boundaries of contemporary art, these three relatively new addresses deserve a place on your cultural radar.

Roman Roth, A Viral Video, installation view at OKOK Gallery, 2026 (photo: CHROMA)

01. OKOK Gallery — Kreuzberg

Art for the senses, not just the walls.

Opened in 2026 by Wendy Chang and Marjolein van der Meer, OKOK Gallery is a fresh addition to Kreuzberg’s independent art scene. Its approach is refreshingly open-ended, bringing emerging and established artists together through painting, sculpture, video, and performance.

Rather than treating art as something to be admired from a polite distance, OKOK emphasizes materiality, sensory experiences, and community. Its September exhibition featuring Yumna Al-Arashi and Bimal Fabbri offered an early glimpse of its programming. With an experimental spirit and an interest in unconventional artistic encounters, OKOK is one to watch as its identity develops.

Where: Wrangelstraße 66A, Kreuzberg.

Passage Gallery

02. PASSAGE — Neukölln

The underground, quite literally.

Who needs a pristine gallery when you have a Berlin subway station? Launched in May 2024, PASSAGE turns an unlikely corner of Hermannplatz’s U-Bahn station into a contemporary art destination.

Artworks appear inside a glass display structure integrated into the station’s architecture, confronting commuters with unexpected encounters between everyday life and experimental artistic practice.

Inspired by the legendary Parisian Pièce Unique gallery, PASSAGE rejects conventional artist representation in favor of independent, site-specific projects. Its curatorial approach is adventurous, intelligent, and distinctly Berlin. The project has since expanded into a broader platform presenting art in unexpected locations.

Where: Hermannplatz U-Bahn station, U7 platform toward Spandau.

Galerie OM

03. Galerie OM — Tiergarten

Where collectible design gets a little weird.

Opened in May 2026, Galerie OM sits somewhere between an experimental design gallery, an eccentric collector’s apartment, and an impeccably curated cultural happening.

Founded by Moana Thies and Oscar Gröne, alongside creative director Julian Zacharias Eide, the space mixes twentieth-century design icons with contemporary objects, without worrying too much about traditional categories.

Its inaugural exhibition, Partie Une, brought together pieces by Pierre Chareau, Ettore Sottsass, and Martin Margiela, among others.
