Few filmmakers capture the darker corners of human nature quite like Andrey Zvyagintsev. Known for his haunting dramas Leviathan and Loveless, the acclaimed Russian director has built a reputation for turning intimate family stories into unsettling reflections on society. After nearly a decade away from filmmaking, he returns with Minotaur, a gripping psychological thriller that explores what happens when personal ambition, betrayal, and political corruption collide.
Set in Russia in 2022, the film follows Gleb (Dmitriy Mazurov), a wealthy business executive whose carefully constructed life is beginning to unravel. His marriage to Galina (Iris Lebedeva) has grown increasingly distant, his teenage son is struggling at school, and his professional responsibilities are becoming more troubling. As Russia’s war in Ukraine intensifies, local authorities demand that Gleb supply employees for military service, forcing him to confront decisions with potentially devastating consequences.
Things take a darker turn when Gleb discovers that his wife is having an affair. What initially resembles a familiar domestic drama gradually transforms into something far more disturbing, as jealousy, wounded pride, and the desire for control push him toward increasingly questionable choices.
Inspired by Claude Chabrol’s 1969 French thriller The Unfaithful Wife, Minotaur brings a classic story of marital betrayal into the political landscape of contemporary Russia. Zvyagintsev uses Gleb’s personal crisis to explore a broader culture in which power protects the privileged, while others are left to face the consequences.
The film’s title draws on the Greek myth of the Minotaur, the half-human, half-bull creature trapped inside a labyrinth. Here, the maze is both psychological and political, raising an uncomfortable question: Is Gleb trapped by the world around him, or has he become the monster within it? Visually, Minotaur carries the director’s unmistakable signature. Stark landscapes, meticulously composed interiors, and long moments of silence create an atmosphere of unease, while flashes of dark humor offer brief relief from the mounting tension. Filmed in Latvia while Zvyagintsev lives in exile from Russia, Minotaur marks a significant return for one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive voices. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and opens in select U.S. theaters on November 20.
More than a political statement or a psychological thriller, Minotaur is a provocative examination of how ordinary people become complicit in extraordinary cruelty. It’s challenging, beautifully crafted cinema that refuses to offer easy answers.
