What happens when a woman who built an empire on deception invites a filmmaker whose entire career revolves around manipulating reality into her home? The result is You Can See Everything, a nearly three-hour documentary that might tell us less about Elizabeth Holmes than about our increasingly desperate need to distinguish truth from fiction. And judging by its extraordinary reception, this uncertainty has become something of a cultural obsession.
There is a certain irony in the fact that Holmes, the disgraced founder of Theranos, has become one of the most fascinating characters in contemporary American culture. Once celebrated as Silicon Valley’s first self-made female billionaire, she promised to revolutionize medicine with a technology that supposedly required only a few drops of blood. The technology never delivered on those promises, the company collapsed, and Holmes was convicted of fraud. Yet the mythology surrounding her has proved remarkably resilient. Documentaries, podcasts, books, and an Emmy-winning television series have turned her into something between a cautionary tale and a pop-cultural icon. With You Can See Everything, released by A24 on October 16, directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim take this fascination somewhere considerably stranger. Beginning 34 days before Holmes enters prison in 2023, the film follows Fielder as he moves into the home she shares with her partner, Billy Evans, and their children. What initially resembles an intimate documentary about a disgraced entrepreneur gradually transforms into a labyrinth of staged situations, shifting perspectives, and increasingly uncomfortable questions about the nature of documentary truth.
Fielder, whose television series Nathan for You and The Rehearsal turned social awkwardness into an elaborate form of conceptual art, seems particularly well suited to the material. His work has always operated in the uncomfortable space between sincerity and manipulation. By constructing absurdly elaborate scenarios around real people, he exposes the artificiality of situations we normally accept as authentic. With Holmes, however, he encounters someone who has arguably spent much of her public life doing something similar, albeit with considerably more serious consequences.
The encounter produces a peculiar reversal. Holmes wants to control her narrative, while Fielder wants to expose the mechanisms through which narratives are constructed. Both understand the power of performance, and neither seems entirely willing to surrender control. The viewer, meanwhile, is left wondering who is directing whom. This is where the film becomes more than another examination of Silicon Valley’s spectacular failures. Holmes belongs to a generation of entrepreneurs who understood that selling a vision could be almost as valuable as delivering a product. Her carefully cultivated image—the black turtlenecks, unusually deep voice, and relentless rhetoric of technological revolution—was as central to the Theranos mythology as its supposed scientific breakthrough. In retrospect, the entire enterprise appears almost like an elaborate performance, sustained by investors, journalists, and a culture that desperately wanted to believe in the next Steve Jobs.
But Fielder’s film suggests that the problem extends beyond Silicon Valley. We live in a world where authenticity has become both a commercial asset and an increasingly unstable concept. Social media rewards carefully constructed spontaneity, influencers manufacture intimacy, and artificial intelligence can produce convincing images and voices of events that never happened. The distinction between documenting reality and creating it has rarely been more difficult to maintain. In this environment, Holmes becomes an almost perfect subject. Not because she offers answers, but because her story exposes how easily appearances can acquire the authority of facts. The film’s commercial success makes this particularly interesting. Despite its unconventional structure and almost three-hour running time, You Can See Everything opened to $15 million in North America, the strongest debut for a non-concert documentary in more than two decades. Its audience was overwhelmingly young, with more than 70 percent of opening-weekend viewers under 35. By its second weekend, the film had passed $45 million domestically, an extraordinary achievement for a work that appears deliberately designed to frustrate conventional expectations of entertainment.
Perhaps the most revealing aspect of this success is that audiences seem to enjoy being uncertain. Rather than providing the reassuring clarity of a traditional true-crime documentary, Fielder and Oppenheim invite viewers into an experience where every revelation generates another question. The film becomes something to argue about, reinterpret, and revisit. Its ambiguity is not an obstacle to its popularity but arguably the very reason for it. There is, of course, a darker side to this fascination. Turning a convicted fraudster into the protagonist of a critically acclaimed cultural phenomenon risks transforming serious wrongdoing into another form of entertainment. Holmes’s victims, including patients who received unreliable medical test results, can easily disappear behind the spectacle of her personality. The more fascinating the character becomes, the easier it is to forget the consequences of the story. Yet the film’s achievement may lie precisely in refusing to resolve this contradiction. Holmes can appear vulnerable without becoming innocent, and Fielder can expose manipulation while engaging in his own. The camera records what happens, but it cannot guarantee that what happens is truthful. In an era when almost every aspect of public life is mediated through images, this distinction feels increasingly important.
The title You Can See Everything therefore sounds less like a promise than a warning. We have unprecedented access to other people’s lives, endless footage of public figures, and technologies capable of reconstructing almost any event. Yet more information does not necessarily produce greater understanding. Sometimes it merely creates more sophisticated ways of being deceived. And perhaps this is what makes the film such an unexpected cultural event. At a time when Hollywood continues to manufacture certainty through familiar franchises, predictable narratives, and carefully managed emotional responses, Fielder and Oppenheim have created something that refuses to tell audiences what to believe. The result is a film that captures a distinctly contemporary anxiety: the suspicion that reality itself has become another performance. Elizabeth Holmes once convinced some of the world’s most powerful people that she could see what was happening inside the human body with a few drops of blood. Now, in a documentary that promises to reveal everything, she remains as elusive as ever. The technology has changed, but our willingness to believe in what we see apparently hasn’t.
